Wasfia Nazreen told a story in her leaderstory talk about an auntie that told her she was unladylike when she was attempting to hula hoop as a child, and this shaming incident stuck with her. Later on one of her summit journeys she carried a hula hoop with her as a symbol of her reclamation–and […]
Hammocks
We need hammocks everywhere–the little garden in Dana, available at the library to check out, all over down by the retention pond.
Make Alston an indoor tree house
What if instead of a big open space where the TV is in Aslton across from Mollie’s coffee there was an intricate series of tree house style cubbies where students could meander/walk/crawl/cozy into to study and have coffee? It could go up all the way to the 2nd floor. Carpeted, pillowed, with electricity.
Houses Like Walden
We could build sustainable/solar paneled houses down by the pond with composting toilets. Partner with GA tech architecture students and build five houses around the pond that are state of the art “tiny houses”. Then rent them out to people as artist/writer retreat. People in them could eat at dining hall, shower at gym. http://www.popsugar.com/home/Photos-Tiny-Houses-14945418#photo-35377248 […]
Pool must be organic
If we make a pool it should be beautifully organically edged like Barton Springs in Austin. Not a regular pool, but a pool that looks like a pond.
Landscaping toward the arts
Make a transition in the landscaping on campus that goes from formal to wild as you walk from the front circle/alumnae house to Dana. At Dana the grasses become meadowlands, and we have sustainability student garden beds, and the green roofs in the new buildings (with a goat), so you get the sense as you […]
Trees as Teachers
At info desk in Alston: lend out earphone walking tours like in a museum of the arboretum on campus. Lend hammocks. Create an interactive paper piece that talks about how to see on the walk (framing views, drawing contour, drawing for information). Partner with philosophy, art, history, english etc. to enrich these pieces. Make it […]
QR codes on all art labels and an Art Tour
Create an audio tour of the art on campus. Have students research, write and orate a visual analysis of the works on campus. QR codes can navigate to a student telling yoiu about the work, and we can create an overall tour of the art on campus. (in the library, alston, Rebeka etc.). Compatible paper […]
